President Lorene Oikawa’s Message – April 2018

Spring is officially here. Although, looking at the weather in some communities around the province you would be forgiven for thinking it’s still winter.

We had our annual general meeting on Saturday, March 24 and it was snowing in Burnaby, but it was mostly wet slush. Our blossoms survived.

The board looks forward to our AGM. The AGM provides an opportunity to meet and hear from our members, update them on the work of the GVJCCA in the past year, and let them know about our upcoming work. It’s a long to-do list that requires all hands on deck and funding. I’m happy to report that we will have more hands to help with the work and the fundraising.

Introducing your new GVJCCA board (in alphabetical order): Chika Buston, Judy Hanazawa, Gary Matson, Yuji Matson, Jack Matsushita, Mana Murata, Ron Nishimura, Lorene Oikawa, Lily Shinde, April Shimizu, Susanne Tabata, Carmel Tanaka, and Grace Eiko Thomson. You’ll notice some familiar names in the list, returning board directors and directors from years past, and new faces, and we will benefit from the experience and fresh ideas from both.

You’ll be hearing from your board, and you have an opportunity to meet some of your board at the National Canadian Film Day event taking place on Wednesday, April 18th at 6:30 p.m. at Tonari Gumi 42 West 8th #101, Vancouver. Also, our next fundraising event the 6th Annual Tonari Gumi & JCCA Charity Classic Golf Tournament is on Saturday, June 16th with a 1 pm shotgun start. Sign up now. Info about both events in this edition of the Bulletin and on the website. Other upcoming events include our annual walking tour in May for Asian Heritage Month which will be listed in an upcoming Bulletin and on the website.

We post information about events in the Bulletin, on the website, and on social media primarily Facebook and Twitter. We are looking to improve our communication and will be refreshing our e-news. If you haven’t given us your email please sign up now. Go to www.gvjcca.org and at the top of the home page you’ll find the subscribe box. Just enter your email address and click on subscribe.

As you know, we highlight Japanese Canadian (JC) community events in The Bulletin and we are in the process of developing an online community calendar where local JC organization events will be highlighted. Some of our longtime members will remember that we did this before and it was a good way to keep track of what is happening. It’s also helpful for our local organizations so we can try to avoid scheduling events on the same day whenever possible. I know it’s been challenging for me to try to come out to support different community events because I haven’t found a way to be in two places at once. And I am sure you are also finding it hard to keep track of what, when and where. The updated community calendar will be a great resource along with your monthly Bulletin magazine.

Your support for the Bulletin is greatly appreciated. Your subscription to the Bulletin which is included in your membership plus your donations ensures that we can keep producing this quality publication and still keep it accessible. Every contribution is appreciated.

We also want to thank you for your support for our 4th annual GVJCCA Community Bowl-a-thon which took place just before the last edition of the Bulletin went to print. Individuals and families gathered at the Lucky 9 Lanes in Richmond and enjoyed some bowling, conversations, and winning prizes. Whether novice or expert bowler, our annual Bowl-a-thon is an opportunity to have some fun and support a good cause, our Bulletin, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Check out the photos and thanks in the special Bowl-a-thon page in this edition. Also, keep February 2019 in mind for our 5th Annual GVJCCA Community Bowl-a-thon. We will post details in the fall.
